How Market Leaders Achieve Their Business Goals Using Enterprise Architecture In These Challenging Times

The German Computerweek did a survey to find out " what would have been different .if the management could introduce an ERP system the second time ". 80% of the respondents said that they will pay more attention to the optimization of their business processes.

This is a clear indication of the need to better align our IT to our business in complex enterprise system implementation which involves heavy investment. Oracle Fusion Middleware Platform, provides a tool to optimize your business processes, to establish an Enterprise Architecture to ensure the implementation of IT system is aligned to the business objectives and strategies and to support the SOA approach for improved reusability of IT components and agility to cope with changes.

Defining, Training and Certifying Architect’s Competencies

There is still a lot of confusion on what to expect from an IT architect. A debate is ongoing around Architect’s roles and specializations: Software, Application, Solution, Infrastructure, Information, Security, Business architects, to name a few. How do you know what kind of architect you need for you company? How do you know what knowledge and skills the architects should bring to the table?

It is little known that core IT Architect competencies are fairly well defined by several industry training and certification programs. While some competency areas and skills seem to be shared by all IT architects, some may be specific to certain specializations.

Your organization may leverage this knowledge in several ways:

  • You could identify development needs of your architects

  • You could raise the level of your Architecture organization by training them in the competencies that they may lack

  • Finally, if you decide to hire certified architects, you will know what to expect from them and their results will be more predictable

Survival Kit of IT Architects in the 21st Century

With increasing adoption of SOA and growth of enterprise service portfolios, organizations struggle to provide effective service life-cycle management that scales across the enterprise. As such, architects today understands that good governance practices are a pre-requisite to success with a Service Oriented Architecture.

Therefore, a new set of tools which
provides a means to control costs, reduce risk, maintain business alignment, and show business value of SOA investments through a combination of people, process, and technology is fast becoming the new survival kit for IT architects in the 21st century.

Designing with Right Quality Attributes in Mind

Architecting your solution to meet the functional requirements is not sufficient to assure its success. Your customers probably have quite specific expectations about how your solution should perform, also known as non-functional requirements. Besides that, you may have to think about cost of maintaining and evolving your application or product in the future, as well as of costs of supporting it in operations. If you plan for it or not, but your IT system always has Quality Attributes that affect all these aspects and areas. It is much better when you get requirements for them, plan, architect measure and manage them rather than letting it happen by chance. Each Quality Attribute has unique set of considerations and sometimes, they compete. It is important for you as an Architect to understand what architectural decisions may affect these attributes, how to measure such impacts, and what to be guided by when dealing with trade-off points.

Talking Green in Multimedia Delivery

The phrase - “A picture is worth a thousand words” can be used to reflect the network traffic demand for multimedia delivery. In fact, it requires more than a thousand words to encode a video to be sent over the internet. With the explosion of multimedia traffic, the notion of “green” will become important in the system delivery. This talk will focus on the “green” aspect from a technology perspective in the different parts of a multimedia delivery system.

Scalable Database Design in Grid Computing Architecture

"Grid Computing represents an evolutionary phase in the history of distributed computing architectures.

Grid's servers approach allows organizations to pool the servers in order to harness  the power of the newest generation of high-performance and low-cost systems. Grid computing is a way to consolidate your hardware – eliminating islands of underutilized computers thus increases the efficiencies of enterprise resources.

Grid computing can dramatically lower the cost of computing, provides the scalability and availability of computing resources, deliver higher productivity, and higher quality."

How Do You Secure a Cloudy Cloud??

Cloud computing is becoming a promising solution for organizations challenged by the current economic downturn and looking at significantly reducing IT expenditure. The global appeal of cloud computing has grown by leaps and bounds, aligning itself with top business priorities, which traditionally have been about increasing profits and reducing cost structures. As one of the new, alternative computing models, cloud computing allows existing IT capabilities to be extended, or new capabilities added, with no or a low up-front costs as it minimizes investments in new infrastructure, training of new personnel or licensing of new software. While the key question here remains on whether a country like Malaysia is ready to embrace the path of 'On Demand Services', one cannot help but ponder the security aspects of this service, taking into account the infallibility, potential risks, as well as compliance and regulations that govern the usage of the cloud.

The presentation will discuss the security issues evolving around one of the fastest growing areas of the ICT industry, and what security capabilities are available to secure the cloud.
